QUADRIVIUM

'A PLACE WHERE FOUR ROADS MEET'

 

Quadrivium explores the four sacred studies of liberal arts: arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy.  It derives from the Pythagorean school of philosophical thought as an investigation of the universe in relation to metaphysical truth and beauty.  These four disciplines will eventually open the human mind to the value of essential Wholeness.

The foundation of Quadrivium is the element of Number; while unquestionably simple in itself, it breathes within the core of the knowledge which Quadrivium seeks.

 

Number : constant

Arithmetic : study of Number itself

Geometry : Number in Space

Harmony (music) : Number in Time

Astronomy : Number in Space & Time

 

In my visual translation of these ideas, I reference Number with a foundation plate which appears in all of the phases. The combinations of textures, colors, and orientations signify a growth and transitioning of knowledge which reveals a perceptual expansion in accordance with the elements of Quadrivium.
